Culture
The Penthouse Studios offers a moderately equipped recording studio, teaching, performance and creative space where local and touring/travelling artists in the community and beyond can go from incubator and creative stage to testing, development and recording/production stage. Each room has a piano for your use and exploration.
Community
Our beautifully designed, intimate space with a touch of vintage African artistry, inspired by the true essence of the African Heritage and Culture - Community. The Village and the Cafè welcomes you into a community where artists are main character and they have a lot to share but without people, there’s no sharing. So the Village is our meeting ground, where artists connect to artists, community with community and artists with community. What a space to be in!
Fuelled by creativity, connection and learning…
Designed for live music and storytelling in community, powered by training, mentorship, collaboration, creative experimentation and performance.
The Penthouse Family Studios hosted its first official public gathering with community, featuring emerging artists of the African Diaspora in December of 2024. With meaningful support from organizations like the Steinway Piano Gallery in Calgary, Through Onyie’s Lens and the entire community, we hosted over 100 guests in the hamlet of De Winton to an African-Inspired night of live music and storytelling.

Inspired by stories we've heard from our parents and adults - so many wish they could play an instrument while some took advanced lessons as kids but no longer practice. This program will enable us test an idea. There are no limits, it could be poetry, guitar, vocals, piano - whatever the parent wants to learn. This program is free but requires a $100 refundable commitment upon selection to encourage completion
The Vision
Nestled in the busy and historic Beltline area of Calgary, is a Black Music Village and Cafe experience...
Our mission is to cultivate a welcoming and inclusive environment where artists - both homegrown and visiting, can find, share and connect community. A cafe where community - families and individuals of all ages and backgrounds can come together to share their passion for music, through listening, training, mentorship, performances, over a warm cup of coffee or over a hot bowl of pepper-soup with friends, family and strangers.
